Per Mitchell Baker's comment in bug 43076, `Java' is a trademark of Sun Microsystems, and all references to `Java' should be removed from Mozilla -- in the interface, and in filenames etc. Where applets in general are meant, references to `Java' can be changed to `applet' or `applets' -- this also allows for forward compatibility of interface text if Mozilla supports other applet systems in the future. This bug may be used as a tracking bug for removing particular references to Java in Mozilla.
setting as a tracking bug. I guess individual bugs should be filed on the specific files that use the term and then this bug should be set to depend on them.

Jan, bug 44841 is about the JavaScript trademark, this bug is about the Java trademark. Did you realize this when you marked this one as a dup of that one? I filed them separately because I guessed that if confirmed, they would need different approaches to solve (since JavaScript is an integral part of Mozilla, whereas Java is not).

oops...forgot to set to reopen...doing now.
Marking dependent on bug 44841, since that's where the discussion is happening. Changing to `Tracking' component, since this sure ain't Build Config, and since we don't have a `Legal Issues' component.

Summary: Remove all references to `Java' (trademark issue) → [TRADEMARK] Remove all references to `Java'
hmmm. we definitely need more info on this. putting on 'rtm need info' radar. cc'ing Sun folks for their input. reassigning to default component owner since chofmann's on sabbatical. this sounds like it's a mozilla-only issue. do we have different rtm tracking mechanisms for mozilla vs netscape?
Whiteboard: [rtm need info]
Yes, mozilla0.9, mozilla1.0 etc.
Keywords: mozilla1.0
ok, cool. rtm- for Netscape 6.

Gonna copy some Java Software folks; I really don't know the legal deal here.

I'll find a lawyer at Sun and will get a ruling on accepted uses of the word "Java" in Mozilla.

Ron, can you please do what George was going to do on this? ------- Additional Comments From drapeau@eng.sun.com 2001-06-14 01:18 ------- I'll find a lawyer at Sun and will get a ruling on accepted uses of the word "Java" in Mozilla.

George, please make sure that Mozilla derivates are also included.
I don't know whom to make the QA contact for this one, but it's sure not me.

I am not a lawyer. Do NOT take my words for legal advice. I suggest that somebody with managerial authority in the Mozilla Project contact the Netscape or AOL legal department, and ask for a legal opinion on the question posed by this bug.
