User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.1) Gecko/2008070208 Firefox/3.0.1 Build Identifier: version 3.0a2pre (2008070903) If an email comes in and it's started downloaded in the main mail listing, it will be downloaded again if opened in a new window. This is especially problematic for emails with large attachments. The workflow for me that found this problem was quite normal I think: 1. I click on an email in the mail listing and saw the body and that a large inline image was downloading. 2. As it was inline, I wanted to view it as large as possible, so I double-clicked the message to open in a new window that I could then maximize. 3. Upon opening the new mail message, the already downloaded data from the message didn't immediately appear and downloading the message had to start from scratch. 4. This meant that multiple large multi-megabyte downloads of the exact same message were happening at the same time. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Susurrus, Are you using IMAP or Pop for mail. One thing I have found for newsgroups, which a similar to IMAP is to set the following pref to a higher number (I use 65536) browser.cache.memory.capacity <value> Use Tools>>Options>>Advanced>>ConfigEditor to adjust the value. This seems to help with multiple or very large attachments.
I'm using IMAP Gmail. I don't see why increasing the cache size would solve this problem, as there shouldn't really be a cache lookup. There should be a "message status" lookup where the message is listed as DOWNLOADING and therefore a new download shouldn't begin for the same data. The problem occurs when downloading the attachment, so Thunderbird isn't finding this message as already being handled by the main mail listing window and is therefore trying to download it again. What Thunderbird should see is that a download has already been started for this email, and then display the same download progress meter on both the View Message window and the regular mail listing window.
(In reply to comment #2) > The problem occurs when downloading the attachment, so Thunderbird isn't > finding this message as already being handled by the main mail listing window > and is therefore trying to download it again. That's bug 345832. What you see with opening the same message in a second window may be they same issue, thus this is probably a duplicate here.

Susurrus, you agree to comment #3? It is a dupe of bug #345832?

It does seem to be a duplicate, though based on the title and the expected outcome description in the first comment, that bug seems to be all over the map.
