I, and, from what I can find in other forums, lots of other people, would LOVE to be able to sync emails, contacts, calendars, tasks, etc. between Thunderbird (and Lightning/Sunbird) and Blackberry devices using Blackberry's Desktop Manager software

imho this is largely a problem of the closed source messaging server of Blackberry (RIM)
would the RIM-server provide simple and standard TLS encrypted imap connectivity, that would be no problem
not much Mozilla can do about that
u would have to develop your own RIM server
