Would it not make sense to use the default address book on which Thunderbird is running?
For Linux - Gnome, this would be the Evolution address book
For Linux - KDE, this would be the kaddressbook (kdepim)
Those address books have a full integration into each system.
For MacOSX we already have this kind of support:

This bug is a duplicate of bug 311293 (kde addressbook) and bug 170265 (evolution).
