I don't know if Netscape still does this but in at least some versions of the Linux version of Netscape it would advise you against using a signature file of over 4 lines. I'd like to see this feature to be added to Mozilla. Implementation: I can't remember how Netscape did it but I suggest bringing up a dialog box when you select your sig file in preferences stating that the signature file is too long and suggest keeping it 4 lines or below. If this isn't possible then bring the dialog box up the first time a message is composed using that signature. Rationale: Long signature files are annoying but many newbies may not even consider this unless they are told, also many companies are adopting the annoying habit of insisting that various crap such as disclaimers and stuff are added to a users .sig file. Although this won't necessarily stop this it may make a few of the more clever ones think about this. Recently someone I know has got a job at sportal.com now I get this following hage .sig appended to any emails he's sending to me (by order of the company), to make it worse there's no -- before the signature so Mozilla/Netscape doesn't know to delete it before replying as the sig was added using MS Outlook Express and the sig is actually in HTML but I've used Mozilla's HTML to text conversion in this pasting. I know this won't help if people still use outlook but if Mozilla becomes a popular mail app it will help in the end. I find this THE most annoying aspect of Netscape 4.x. Any attempt at doing this should have a "don't show this dialog again" check-box. I understand the rationale of wanting people to be good citizens, but continual harassment is really annoying.
I agree - I did go on a bit in my inital description but I did suggest the following: "I suggest bringing up a dialog box when you select your sig file in preferences stating that the signature file is too long and suggest keeping it 4 lines or below. If this isn't possible then bring the dialog box up the first time a message is composed using that signature." I want this reminder to be something that'll make people think if they use long sig files as they're annoying but they should only be told about this *once*
