Can't read local UNIX mail

Details
Mozilla, as of a CVS build on July 19, 2000, is unable to read email from the
local system w/o installing a pop or imap server. I would like to be able to
associate a new e-mail address with specific mail files on the system.
It just seems silly to start up an pop server to only allow localhost to read mail.
