Split-off from bug 233930 comment 15. If you get a lot of mail, including mail from mailing lists, and e.g. corporate mail from support@ or similar, you like already filter it in a certain folder, to not let it distract you from mail selt specifically to you. If you enable the new mail notification / alert, you still get notified about them, though. That's fine in general - I do want to know about most new mail, despite the fact that I sort it in folders already on reception, using filters. But there are *some* messages like mailing lists which I do not care about. I want to ignore these mails as far as the notification is concerned. Note that Junk mail can be ignored based on the flag, not folder: See bug 272125 for that.

Oh, yes. Using filters to control biff is a much nicer solution / idea than folder-specific prefs. More generic, and better UI (you filter mails anways, so just add another action to the filter, instead of going to the folder prefs dialog). Marking dup.
