All credit to Vlad for the original proposal, but I think it's a great idea. ("Suggested changes to sheriffing" thread in dev.planning) There are a variety of problems, questions, and planning conversations that are specific to sheriff responsibilities and tree management. I'm not particularly concerned with whether this is realized as an actual newsgroup or just a mailing list, as long as it is publicly accessible, but I wanted to get that ball rolling, whatever the format.
I'd definitely prefer NG, but am ok with mailing list... anything else is really sub-optimal for me
I believe I understand Callek to be ruling out the pigeon network, which I grudgingly accept. I think newsgroups would be my preference too - I don't know how much extra overhead it represents for us though, relative to a mailing list. My chief concern is just that a list of some sort come into being.
(In reply to comment #2) > I believe I understand Callek to be ruling out the pigeon network, which I > grudgingly accept. Correct, but for the record I'm not authoritative here. So if its deemed pigeon is best, I guess I can accept that as well.
Newsgroups, mailing lists and Google Groups archives all come as a package. Not having one of them is actually more hassle than having them all. Does mozilla.planning.sheriff sound OK? IMO trying to have posting restrictions would be more trouble than it's worth - can we start by trying social controls? Gerv

Not sure what you mean by "more hassle" here, as just a mailing list is way less hassle to set up than a newsgroup+mailing list+google group.
(In reply to comment #4) > Newsgroups, mailing lists and Google Groups archives all come as a package. Not > having one of them is actually more hassle than having them all. > > Does mozilla.planning.sheriff sound OK? I'd like to hear vlad's take as well, but given that this is a place for sheriffs to coordinate not only intra-group, but also with people like IT and Release Engineering, maybe something like mozilla.dev.treemanagement? Maybe I'm overthinking. I will definitely bow to your wisdom, Gerv, on our newsgroup naming conventions. > IMO trying to have posting restrictions would be more trouble than it's worth - > can we start by trying social controls? I agree that we should start open and restrict reactively, rather than restricting proactively.
I don't have any opinion on the name -- though mozilla.dev.wildwest might be more appropriate ;) I'd put it in .dev though instead of .planning.
Sorry, I meant mozilla.dev.planning.foo - it was supposed to be under the existing planning group. "wildwest" is cool but I'm trying to keep the newsgroup names understandable at first look. Jonathan: if you and vlad want to decide the scope, I'm happy with either mozilla.dev.planning.sheriff or mozilla.dev.planning.treemanagement Gerv
I think mozilla.dev.planning.treemanagement sounds fine. I've sent a note to dev.planning just now asking if anyone sees anything mind-alteringly terrible with that, but if there's no response, or no strikingly better wording in the next day or so, I say we go with it.
Nit: "tree-management", toavoidtherunonname? :)
Why not simply mozilla.dev.tree-management? It doesn't really need to belong in the "planning" section, does it? (And the simpler the better, I think.)
Justin: You're right - we do have a hyphen convention. "tree-management" is better. OK, let's go with "mozilla.dev.tree-management". Gerv

Who's planning to moderate this list? It won't actually be "moderated" but we need someone responsible for clearing legitimate posts that get caught in the spam filters and so forth.
(In reply to comment #14) > Who's planning to moderate this list? I'm guessing, without asking him, that Vlad would carry that burden as well. :)
status?
I suspect that any sheriff should be able & willing to help with moderation. I certainly am.
(In reply to comment #16) > status? Waiting for me to get caught up on my buglist that exploded over the last three weeks. Should have this taken care of in the next couple days though.

Should have this taken care of in the next couple days though. I know you were working on Bugzilla things in December that took priority, is this back on the list now?

This was actually finished by Giganews earlier this week. Just haven't had time to follow-up here. I've unhidden the list. Enjoy!
