w/o all the lovely styling, but gives you some ideas about the text. Should we reference extensions like Lightning and ExpToolbar in the release notes, or use the start page to publicize those?
If we reference Lightning we need to ensure there is a build that works with 3.0b1. Typically due to the way we do releases, the versions that nightly Lightning works with skip from (e.g.) 3.0b1pre to 3.0b2pre and don't hit the release version. Also note you may want a page equivalent to http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/3.0a3/ but that can come out of the release notes page. Also we'll also have capabilities for a What's New page and a Start page now.
Just wondering, will this be *Shredder* Beta 1 or *Thunderbird* 3.0 Beta 1? Summary and comment #1 are contradicting each other here...
This should be Thunderbird 3.0 Beta 1.
(In reply to comment #5) > This should be Thunderbird 3.0 Beta 1. Is there a bug for setting the branding back to Tb when the Beta branch is cut.
(In reply to comment #6) > (In reply to comment #5) > > This should be Thunderbird 3.0 Beta 1. > > Is there a bug for setting the branding back to Tb when the Beta branch is cut. That isn't going to happen. Even on a beta branch nightly builds will still have non-official branding.

I've done up a changelog of bugfixes from 2008-10-06 16:02 (one minute after the last checkin that made it to Alpha 3) to (Now) as of 0600am 26 Nov 08 PST. Numbers 248, after I removed a branch-only bug and a Alpha 3 tracking bug. http://www.rumblingedge.com/2008/11/26/thunderbird-30-beta-1-released/ (as of now, the title still says "Not yet" released) So, I guess it can be safely said that >200 fixes went into beta 1 over alpha 3.

> - Automatic Message Download for IMAP > *By default,* Thunderbird will now download IMAP messages in the background > to allow for faster message loading, and better off-line operation. Also, may be noteworthy that bug 385502 quietly converts any existing IMAP folders to offline storage, this caught (at least me) by surprise.
That is supposed to be announced in the Welcome/New page.

nit, blank line missing after "Saved searches can be grouped or threaded."
An other thing to consider for the release notes: We do not migrate the expand/collapse state of folders and servers from pre 3.0 Beta 1 profiles but do maintain the state going forward.
Attached patch marketing's edits (obsolete) — Splinter Review
Edited down and tried to make this a little more user friendly.

Nit, there is a paragraph linespace error for the second bullet under Trouble Shooting header.
It does "feel" like we are still missing stuff. Wasn't there a resolution on the js+security issue?
Some comments: - We're building off of Gecko 1.9.1 not 1.9 - Given this is the first beta, would it be worth mentioning a couple of extra things we already mentioned in the alphas? e.g. -- Easy install of addons (via the new pane in the manager) -- Performance gains in gecko (javascript?) -- improvements to junk scoring subsystem - The rumbling edge link needs updating to that defined in comment 9
(In reply to comment #23) > Wasn't there a resolution on the js+security issue? We know what we're going to do there, but the bug got slipped to b2 so that it would have more time to bake before shipping.
I've got my svn committing working, so Gozer's off the hook, thx for all the commits. I've tweaked it a little based on Mark's feedback, Gecko 1.9.1 and referring to the rumbling edge 3.0 beta 1 page directly instead of the top-level page. I'll go look at the early alpha release notes to see about pulling in some of those things.
Comment #22 has not been addressed yet. Needs a line break between bullet one and two under Trouble Shooting heading.
Search seems to be much much faster. "Search entire message" is slow on the first query. Subsequent queries are quick Subject, to, and from seem really fast from the start.
I've pushed a few more changes. Re Search, body search over a large folder with lots of non-text parts should be faster, because we ignore non-text parts now. But I'm not sure it's worth calling out in the release notes.
I've pushed more changes, and set the release date as tomorrow. Please review. I think Rebron has an other set of changes, and I'll update this bug when those have landed... also, see http://trunk.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/3.0b1/, which is the release page - I've mostly taken stuff from the "what's new" section of the release notes, but
The release notes still say "Gecko 1.9" in one place. Correctly 1.9.1 a few rows down.
Attached patch Updated content (obsolete) — Splinter Review
Changed Thunderbird 3.0 to Thunderbird 3. Cleaned up User Experience Improvements section.
(In reply to comment #31) > The release notes still say "Gecko 1.9" in one place. Correctly 1.9.1 a few > rows down. I think this is the content Mangus commented on. Released: December 9, 2008 Thunderbird 3.0 Beta 1 is a preview release for the next major version of Thunderbird which is built on top of Mozilla's next generation layout engine, Gecko 1.9. Thunderbird 3.0 Beta 1 is available for testing purposes only and is intended for developers and our testing community.
Other patch is obsolete

The AB star information is not quite accurate nor as helpful as it could be. And birthday is a separate idea and sentence. current: "If someone is already in your address book, it's now indicated by a star icon. If they are not, you can add them with one click. You can also edit contact details inline, and a new birthday field allows you to keep track of your friends' birthdays." new: "If someone is in your address book it is indicated by a yellow star icon, which you can click to edit contact details inline. If they are not in your address book you can add them with one click of the icon. A new birthday field allows you to keep track of your friends' birthdays." Addons information seems strange, but perhaps I'm not completely clued into what we're trying to convey. current wording "The new Add-ons Manager (Tools > Add-ons) can now be used to download and install a Thunderbird customization from the hundreds of Add-ons available from our community add-ons website. When you first open the Add-ons Manager, a list of recommended Add-ons is shown. Note that few add-ons are compatible with this beta at the time of release, as add-on developers need to upgrade them.)" a) When I open addons it says all recommended addons are already installed or incompatible. not very comforting given what we've just told them above b) if most or all addons are incompatible I'm not sure why we're highlighting this feature. Despite the fact that addons is indeed improved, there's almost no *useful* change. If this information is intended for addon developers I think it's the wrong venue. c) missing a "(", or a ")" needs to be removed

If they are not in your > address book you can add them with one click of the icon. A new birthday field > allows you to keep track of your friends' birthdays." Except you can't mention colours. On mac its a blue star. So filled/unfilled maybe?
(In reply to comment #36) > mac its a blue star. So filled/unfilled maybe? Mac likes blue? :) colored, and empty is another possibility.
(In reply to comment #37) > (In reply to comment #36) > > mac its a blue star. So filled/unfilled maybe? > > Mac likes blue? :) > > colored, and empty is another possibility. empty could be better, as again, mac has quite a significant blue border for the empty star.
Lines 60 and 61 of the release notes: > Thunderbird 3 Beta 1 is built on top of the Gecko 1.9.1 platform Gecko 1.9.1 has ... There is some punctuation missing, and the back-to-back reference to Gecko looks a bit odd (why not just say ", which" and combine the sentences?).
This probably needs to be updated as well, unless it's on your list already: > We are releasing [early alphas] of the next version of Thunderbird 3 ... http://trunk.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/#tb3
