I can confirm this, but only in Gmail (and Google Docs). Option-Delete seems to work fine elsewhere (e.g. in the Comments box of this bug). So this may be a Google bug. I see the problem (in Gmail) in today's Minefield (trunk aka FF 3.2) and Shiretoko (1.9.1-branch aka FF 3.1) nightlies, but not in today's GranParadiso (1.9.0-branch aka FF 3.0.X) nightly. I tested on OS X 10.5.5. Note there's another bug concerned with Command-Delete (bug 420669) ... though it's probably not related.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Summary: Option-Delete (Deleting word by word) does not work in text fields. → Option-Delete (Deleting word by word) does not work in Gmail text fields.

Though this may be a Google bug, I'm putting it under Cocoa widgets for convenience's sake.

Interestingly, there's a similar problem on Windows: Ctrl-Backspace doesn't work (in Gmail) in a recent trunk nightly, though it works fine in FF 3.0.4. And once again, Ctrl-Backspace works fine in other text fields (like the bmo Additional Comments field), even in the trunk nightly. For some reason, the problem doesn't happen on Linux, even in Gmail and even in a recent trunk nightly -- Control-Backspace works as expected.

Do we have Google contacts we can CC on this bug?

Since this also happens on Windows, it can't be a Cocoa widgets bug. In fact it's probably not any kind of Widget bug, but I'm keeping it there for convenience. It's much more likely to be a Google bug.

This is not just a Google bug. It happens on other sites such as at the following site, http://www.englishforums.com/.

(In reply to comment #6) Please provide specific steps to reproduce that don't require an account ... or at least only require a free account. (In the latter case also include instructions on how to get a free account.)

Certainly. Please proceed to http://www.englishforums.com/English/Help/Forum11.htm. Click "new post" button on the left. You will be presented with a text editor. Try typing and deleting text in the editor. You do not need to have an account to access the editor. Cheers!

Alternatively, try: http://www.mozilla.org/editor/midasdemo/ That should work (and does in Firefox 3.0.x). And that makes this not a Gmail bug.

It looks like the builds do not work in some text editors such as Gmail, Google Docs. I think this is serious because there are some individuals who do a lot of work on Web 2.0 software and this bug could devastate them.

(In reply to comment #8) Thanks. I stand corrected. I see the same problem at www.englishforums.com (following your STR) and (as Sam mentioned) at http://www.mozilla.org/editor/midasdemo/. And (oddly) I now see the problem on Linux (as well as on OS X and Windows). So here's a summary: Control-Backspace/Option-Delete (delete a whole word) doesn't work in FF 3.1 (the 1.9.1 branch) or FF 3.2 (the trunk) in full-featured JavaScript-based text editors (like the Midas editor, the Gmail editor, and the englishforums editor). This is true on OS X, Windows and Linux. This is a regression, since Control-Backspace/Option-Delete works fine in these editors on Firefox 3.0.4.
Summary: Ctrl-Delete/ Option-Delete (Deleting word by word) does not work in some text fields (Gmail, Google Docs etc.) → Ctrl-Backspace/Opt-Delete (delete a word) doesn't work in Midas and Google editors on trunk and 1.9.1 branch

Sam: I'm pretty sure this isn't a Widget bug, but I don't know where to put it.

Let's try Core : Editor :-)

Core::Editor is probably right, but let's CC some people that might have an idea.
