Yes, I see before it became purple the highlights were black with yellow text. In September it was yellow ochre with white text, also beautiful, and before that hard yellow. All tested on the same page: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/3.2a1pre/whatsnew/ on Windows XP.

See bug 451204. It's designed behavior for an accessibility issue. Yellow is not good color for UI. Because it doesn't have enough contrast with White. -> INVA

FWIW, I'm not attached in any way to the purple chosen, and am open to suggestions. However, as Masayuki-san notes due to accessibility constraints, I had a limited palette to choose from. See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=345741 and note that I ruled out any blue shade as it would be too similar to the standard selection colour on Windows systems (my thinking was in bug 451204 comment 19. Also worth noting that one of the wins of selection highlighting is that the colours are customisable via prefs: ui.textHighlightBackground, and ui.textHighlightForeground
