Text cursor jumps to the "quick find" page search or back somewhere in the middle of the previously written text while typing in a text box such as an email or a Yahoo group. Or here... it happened 3 times as I wrote this.

While typing in a text box, such as this box I am typing in right now. The cursor jumps either back in the previously written text (as it has done now twice) Here is an example...
While typing in a text box, suchere is an example as this box I am typing in right now.
You'll notice the "ere is an example" from "Here is an example" jumped up in the middle of the previous text right after the word such, and will then continue from there. Until it jumps again elsewhere.
or... it will jump down to the quick find at the bottom of the page. (As it just did). The age. of page. was just entered into the quick find.
I have to then find where it left off and move the cursor back to that position to continue.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. I need only type into a text box (as I am doing now) and it will occur. As it just did now three times as I tried to write this.
2.
3.
Actual Results:
The text cursor jumps back randomly into the previously written text and then continues from there. Until it jumps elsewhere in the text. Or it jumps to the 'quick find' at the bottom of the page.
Expected Results:
Type without the cursor jumping around.
This occurs with all themes even the default theme. I use adblock plus 1.0 and the Nautipolis theme 1.8.43.

This works for me using: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008102920 Firefox/3.0.4
Reporter: can you try this in safe mode: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode_(Firefox) and with a fresh profile http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile

Sorry for the delay, I confused Firefox safe mode with the Windows Vista safe mode. I eventually figured things out and did use the Firefox safe mode...
Anyway, this DID NOT correct the problem. I am in Firefox safe mode right now and the cursor/text jumped back into the previously written text twice.
In the first sentence, were I wrote "Sorry for the delay, I confused Firefox safe mode" it came out like this...
"Sorry for thefox safe delay, I confused Fire..."
where the end of Firefox 'fox' and 'safe' jumped back right after the word 'the' and then continued from there on....
This does NOT happen in other text programs such as MS Word or notepad.
Is Mozilla aware of this problem ??? I've read thru the bugs and see others are also having this problem.
Should I try the new firefox 3.05, or wait ???

Can you try this on a new profile as well (you may have certain configurations that can be unintuitive) http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile . And you should definitely upgrade to 3.0.5 regardless.

I have upgraded now to 3.05 and created and ran firefox with a new profile however this HAS NOT corrected the problem.
Is there anything else I can do to correct this ??? This is very unintuitive and has made firefox unusable.
thank you...

possibly due to bug 256763? Do you have a java applet running by any chance?

Are you working on a notebook computer? If yes, does it have a touchpad or similar mouse-replacing device?
Does this bug also occur on desktop computers that have a normal keyboard without any touchpad?

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, it only happens on my Dell XPS M1530 Vista notebook. It does not happen on my desktop. My notebook has a touchpad, which I do not use. I have a usb mouse.

Assuming that the touchpad was not technically switched off, and noting that the "bug" does not occur on the desktop, I think chances are that reporter has accidentally touched the touchpad while typing which in turn caused the mouse pointer to jump around. Doesn't look as if this is a problem caused by us.
Reporter, you should disable the touch pad if you don't use it, or just place a thick piece of cardbord to cover it, which will make accidental mouse jumps less likely.

Thank you for the reply... I have in fact considered that and covered the pad with a hard plastic which did not resolved the problem.

Please post the versions you are using a) on the Dell Laptop and b) on the desktop PC (Help -> About Firefox, select and copy the string with the numbers at the bottom).

Do you mean versions of Firefox ? If so, I have the same version on both laptop and desktop.

Thank you, that looks like recent version of FF.
Hmmm. With a hard plastic that covers the touch pad, reporter normally shouldn't get unwanted touch pad reactions, unless it's a pressure-sensitive touchpad (mine seems to be temparature-sensitive).
myjunkmail_03, if you want to exclude this as a cause, you should ask someone to temporarily disable your touchpad from your windows control panel, so that you can be 100% sure that it's not that. After technically disabling your touchpad (so that touching and moving round on the touchpad will not do anything), do you still see this bug?

> possibly due to bug 256763? Do you have a java applet running by any chance?
Reading reporter's comment #6, I still think comment #5 might apply, and this could be a case of bug 256763.
myjunkmail_03, a java applet might be running in another tab of your firefox window. Say you're having an interactive streetmap in your first tab, and bugzilla.mozilla.org in the second tab. Due to bug 256763, your text input on bugzilla might not work because the streetmap is running as a java application in the other tab.
Does the bug still occur under the following conditions?
- there's only one FF window (no other FF windows)
- there's only one tab open in that FF window (no other tabs)
- the open tab is definitely NOT a java application (e.g. use bugzilla which does not have java application)

Yes it still occurs with the touchpad disabled and only one window/tab open. Like when I respond on here, with nothing else open...
could it be my laptop ? could it be vista ? where and what should i look at ?
