In the standard "All Folders" view, it would be incredibly useful to be able to hide folders. If a number of accounts are set up, each with their own folders, the pane quickly becomes unwieldy. The "favourite folders" and "unread messages" pane are useful, but they don't have the heirarchy, which makes the "All folders" view so easy to navigate.
The best option from my point of view would be to have a "hide this folder" option available for any folder in the right click menu, and a button at the top of the "All folders" pane that switches the view between all folders, and all un-hidden folders.

I think bug 370737 would be a better way to satisfy your needs.
generally, I'd agree. I think that this might come in handy too, but could probably have a similar functionality to the "favourite folders" view with 370737 fixed.
A possibility to hide folders is getting more and more important these days, as Thunderbird is often used with open Groupware Servers such Kolab or Scalix these days.
Those servers (and probably others too) store Contacts/Calendars/Public Folders as IMAP Folders (which can or must not be deleted or unsubscribed).
We really need a way to keep these useless and potentially dangerous folders (it's not a good idea to mess with a calendar folder using an IMAP mail client) out of view from ordinary users.
I agree that https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=370737 COULD be a solution to this, but the way the Favorite view currently works (completely eliminating the tree structure), this would require MAJOR changes to make it usable (=> retain the tree).
A simple way to hide an ordinary folder, even if it's only available through "about:config" would be a GREAT improvement for everyone using those groupware systems. And since groupware and competing with Outlook are (should be) major goals, I'd consider this a simple but important feature.

This feature would be very useful.
A good option for this feature would be to hide a folder until there are new messages in the folder.

Has anybody found a solution to this feature request?

This should be resolved now. The "Favorite Folders" view shows the folder hierarchy (unless you select "Compact View").
