Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.19 (20081209)
I have three Mail subfolders who's name ends in a period (I know.. easy fix: don't, but I figure you might want to know about it anyway). i.e.,
awards, etc. principals, etc. Michael Jr.
Over time, a 2nd folder appears with an arbitrary number replacing the period:
awards, etc336dd7b1 principals, etc54318a34 Michael Jr18894a14
And neither version of the folders are then accessible.
Just a warning for others not to name folders with period at the end...
Reproducible: Didn't try

When did you create mail folder named "Michael Jr."? Tb 1.5 era?
When did you started to use Tb 2.0.0.x? Problem didn't occur during Tb 2.0.0.0 thru Tb 2.0.0.18, but started to occur when you upgraded to Tb 2.0.0.19?
If you created "Michael Jr." during Tb 1.5 era, and if you transfered from Tb 1.5 to Tb 2.0.0.19 recently, it's problem of Bug 379101.
It was a recent migration from Netscape 7.2 to Thunderbird 2.0.0.19, but the problem didn't show up right away. It was only after several restarts of Thunderbird that the problem folders began to occur and not all at the same time. It wasn't until the third appeared that I finally realized the pattern.
I really did do a search for a duplicate bug, but "ending period" didn't point me to the bug thread. Now I can answer the ongoing question: yes, the problem occurs in Mac OSX also.

Netscape 7.2 is similar to Tb 1.5 or Tb 1 for Bug 379101. DUP of Bug 379101.

Have you searched bugs for "Product = other than Thunderbird" too?
