Details
I discovered this in the process of reporting 477517
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create an IMAP account with a server that resolves, but won't respond
2. Open the Subscribe window for the account
3. Watch it spin for a bit
4. Press the 'Cancel' button
Expected result:
1. Subscribe window closes
2. I hear nothing more about it
Actual result:
1. 'netstat -tp' shows that a connection from thunderbird-bin to imap.gmail.com:143 remains in SYN_SENT for about a minute
2. A dialog box titled 'Alert' pops up after a few minutes(!) with the text 'Connection to server imap.gmail.com timed out.'

Still present in Thunderbird 3 Beta 2.

I still see this with newsgroup accounts in Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100227 Thunderbird/3.0.3.
Of course, the Stop button is known to be non-functional. That's bug #239616.
However, if I collapse the newsgroup account that is connected but cannot download, select another account, and expand that second account, I subsequently get a timeout popup for the first account. My actions should imply that I have closed the first account, causing the attempts to download to cease and thus not having the timeout popup appear.

It might take a while. I have one newsgroup subscription (among three) that sometimes times-out. This situation is only occasional. I will have to wait until I see it happen again.

I think I saw this intermittently today with an E-mail account. I was trying to check for new messages, but the POP3 server was offline (something that happens too often with my current E-mail hosting service). I cannot confirm because the server is now back online.
