The menulist (id="outgoing_server") providing a choice of SMTP servers, either detected or to chose from those already configured, is empty and collapsed to zero width if auto-configuration is run without any SMTP server being defined yet. Consequently, the name of the selected server is not visible.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start with a new profile.
2. Cancel import and account wizard.
3. Select File > New > Mail Account.
4. Once done, no SMTP server is visible, the drop-down list is empty.

Setting an explicit width for #outgoing_server shows that indeed the correct server name is inserted there. Defining or importing account settings in step #2 results in the menulist having the correct width to match the existing SMTP servers, however the suggested new SMTP server isn't contained in that list either. Just adding the identified SMTP server to the menulist if it's not yet there would probably resolve the issue.

[Win32 nightly, BuildID=20090504031619]
Inset shows the menulist after an account was set up already.

Changing platform to "All" even though the issue manifests itself differently on Linux [3.0b3 build1]. Here, the drop-down menu for the SMTP server seems to have either a minimum or fixed width, thus the first part of the selected server is visible but then cut off after that width has been reached.

Adding the selected server to the list and making sure that the width of outgoing_server is adjusted to its content should fix this on either platform.

After the redesign of bug 506290, this looks much better now with the current Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4pre) Gecko/20090912 Shredder/3.0b4pre nightly. The box appears to be of a fixed size, which still implies though the the server names may be truncated (the same is true for the incoming server as well). Also, the drop-down list still lacks the name of the auto-configured SMTP server if it doesn't exist yet for any account.

This is no longer an issue after bug 549045 revamped the account wizard again. Looking at Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:2.0b13pre) Gecko/20110316 Thunderbird/3.3a4pre, the guessed configurations come as a label and are not restricted in width (except for the dialog with), and the drop-down menu is only still present in the manual configuration. There, the guessed server is part of the drop-down menu, and its size adjusts to the string length.
