It marks things read that I haven't read, and takes up room I can't spare) When I open T-bird, the 3-pane has the message-pane open. Press F8, nothing happens. Do: View ->Layout ->[x] MessagePane. Sometimes! I pretty much have to do it twice. Go to another folder. Message pane is open! Go through the nonsense above. Go back to Inbox. Damned message pane is back! Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. [see Details] 2. 3.
FOLLOW-UP after some additional testing. The situation is even more annoying than I described above. If I, say, (1) open the Inbox and eliminate the message pane, then (2) open another folder IN A NEW TAB, and eliminate the damned message pane, then (3) switch back to the Inbox tab. The message pane is BACK! Also, I need to do View ->Layout ->[x] MessagePane TWICE -- ALWAYS TWICE. The first time, the selected message is displayed in the pane which was previously blank; only on the second time does the message pane disappear [for a little while]. A possibly related issue, which I will file as a separate bug, there is a regression in the way the list-of-folders is displayed in multi-tab.
