Just as the summary says. This is the second time this has happened.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.right click on inbox, click on compact
2.
3.
Actual Results:
all messages are gone. Not in the trash folder, just gone.
John what version of thunderbird are you using ? How big was your mailbox ? Do you have a virus scanner enabled on your machine ?

Was file size of "Inbox" under mail directory (not Inbox.msf) ZERO after the loss of mails?
Do you periodically run external program such as auto-backup, disk scan of anti-virus software, who reads Tb's files for mail folder?
I don't know the meaning of the question about size, but the status line showed zero posts.
I do run auto backup (Mozy) and virus scan (CA). Don't know what a "TB" file is.

Also, I restored the inbox from Mozy, but it didn't help. Is there a trick for restoring files? I can't find anything in help.

See Bug 498814 Comment #4.
Summary: compacting the inbox deletes all messages → compacting the inbox deletes all messages (Mozy is used for auto backup)
consolidating / dup to bug 498814

As I wrote in bug 498814, "possible file size=0 by Compact of Tb 2 in bug 498814" can't occur in Tb 3.1xpre and later, and it can't occur too in Tb 3.0xpre builds around bug open date of this bug(checked Tb 3.0b3pre 2009-06-02 build, 2009-06-15 build) and some newer Tb 3.0xpre builds.
So duping was wrong.

re-opening.

"just gone" is merely "thread pane became blank after Compact", isn't it?
Was mail actually lost in mail folder file by Compact?
Even though mail is not shown too after restart of Tb, Rebuild Index(Repart Folder) shows mails again, isn't it?

Hi,

I'm not sure where to add to this, as this one says it's resolved, but clearly it's not if I'm having the same issues : (

I'm very upset now b/c I had no backup on this laptop since I lost my desktop due to lightening, & was using this laptop until I get my new computer.

This is the 2nd time this has happened to me.

On my desktop it happened once. I lost the ENTIRE inbox & yes there was a lot of mail in there, but I was under the impression TB could handle it.

THIS time though, I barely had any mail in this inbox since I just started this account after losing the desktop. I guesstimate there was maybe 100-200 e-mails in there, maybe less.

What had I been doing at the time?

I was moving my sent mail into a backup folder so I could import my sent mail from the desktop to here.

There was about over 2k worth of sent mail which is small for me since I'm a heavy e-mail user.

After the mail had moved over, I couldn't get TB to pop up again from taskbar. When it did, I saw the compact button. I clicked on it & the next time I went to look at all my accounts, one of them had lost the inbox.

I was very upset, I closed TB down, deleted the .msf file, opened it & still nothing. : (

Please fix this problem. Oh & I'm using 17.0.7

So the inbox is totally gone, right???

This bug was closed as "RESOLVED INCOMPLETE".
i.e. No one could provide evidence of "Actual bug of Tb==Flaw in code of Tb actually exists", including bug opener.
Please note that anyone can delete Tb's file for mail folder at any time, including anti-virus software and you.

What is evidence that your problem is same issue as problem reported to comment #0 of this bug? How could you know that this bug(report of comment #0), which was closed as "RESOLVED INCOMPLETE", is same as your problem?

Even if "compacting the inbox deletes all messages" is same, external phenomenon of "compacting the inbox deletes all messages" is not always same problem. Please open separate bug for your problem, with clear/crisp/detailed problem descrition which is useful for problem analysys by developers, with attaching sufficient data for problem analysis, after searchng bugzilla.mozilla.org for already opened bugs well.
I have no idea if it's the same issue. It sounded like it & of course there's no way to replicate it (Thank GAWD), otherwise we'd all have NO e-mail left.

It may have even happened to me twice before making this a 3rd time. I can't remember, as years go by in between when this happens.

But this last time it happened within months (about 6 months) of the last time it happened. Totally different computer & OS.

I opened a new bug - 890721

Thanks

Where can we see "clear/crisp/detailed problem descrition which is useful for problem analysys by developers" and "attached sufficient data for problem analysis" in that bug?
You could actually reproduce your problem consistently by "Steps to reproduce:" what you wrote in that bug?
?

I already stated what happened.

I don't know what you are talking about.

No, I'm not going to try & reproduce the problem so I risk losing my other mail.

I run a biz & work for other people too. I can't do tests like this & jeopardize my livelihood.

What I said happened should be enough. If you have any questions, just ask.

Thank you
