As explained in this spec [ http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0Acwo2Bn17-PrZGZudHRobnJfOGhka2RocGdk&hl=en ] we want to make sure users of an add-on know what they're getting into if the add-on they want to install does something that we consider noteworthy. My suggestion is a small label/link that can be put near the install button on search/browse listings, as well as on the add-on's display page, which indicates the add-on has "Disclosed Practices". (Trying to think of better copy for that... suggestions welcome -- maybe something about user control or experience but we don't want to make these add-ons villains) When clicked, it should open an bubble overlay that lists the practices, with a link to view more information about what those practices mean. Perhaps for the add-on display page, we could have a section or area that lists these without the bubble overlay. That way we can have users that don't have JS enabled go there when they click from a search/browse page. As these practices are important to disclose, I think we should also consider a design that has the bubble pop up even just on hover, or on hover of the install button. Neil, could you take a look at this? We haven't targeted this for a release yet, but would be good to have a first crack in 2 weeks or so.
Instead of using progressive disclosure, we should just make this information visible. Most of the time it will just be one piece of information, like "The first time you run AdBlock, you'll see a wizard for selecting a list provider". Hiding that kind of thing behind progressive disclosure simultaneously makes it seem scarier and guarantees few users will see it. It's hard to come up with a name for the progressive-disclosure label because there shouldn't be one. How about an information icon (white 'i' in a blue circle) followed by the text, between the description and the install button?

Here's a wireframe of how we could add the add-on notes to the individual page. The link would appear in the area above the "View Privacy Policy" link, and the entire section would be flagged with a "!" yield sign icon ala the Firefox warning icon. When the user clicks, they get the other attached image - the install notes slide out underneath the install button. There is a "more info" help button that helps walk novice users through exactly what this section means for them, and what the specific warnings mean. We could either do this as a modal window, or we could hide/show the warning info underneath each line similar to how many FAQ pages work.
Here's the "open" state that shows the add-on info div visible with how its contents could look.
The warning icon conveys that there is something wrong with the behavior. That sends the wrong message.
Hi Neil, thanks for taking a look. I think we want this to be presented as neutral information rather than a warning. We should be friendly, but still make sure that users see this. I'm also starting to think we shouldn't hide this by default, as I think people may not know to click on "Install Notes" for this type of information. Also not sure Install Notes is the right name, as that makes me think more about compatibility/system requirements.
Hey Neil, will you have time to look at this again soon?
Is this better? I'm still not quite sure what the header should be for this box - maybe something casual like "For your information"?

Yeah, definitely better. I'll keep thinking on a good title. Also thinking we should move (?) More Info to just be "What does this mean?" at the bottom. Can we a see a hi-fi mockup of this?
Yes, definitely - I'll post something by end of day tomorrow (Tuesday).

Here's a hi-fi mock of how we could present this information. The design is intentionally sparse and clean so it's not too attention-grabbing. I'm not sure where the "more information" help link would go, but I do think we should have some more information on what exactly this information means. A thought - we could do a popup window (ala the Share This popup, but on rollover) that displays a bit of text.
Thanks Neil, I think the design looks good. I'll think more on the wording next week.
With the last release we changed the No Surprises policy such that the important practices we were concerned about require opt-in. It doesn't make much sense to warn the user that they'll be asked permission to do something since they can just click No, so we're going to leave this feature out for now. Resolving the bug as the designs were completed and available if we ever need this again.
