PCRE and/or our use of it are the cause of many bugs - performance, unicode, other functionality. Whatever way you view it we are looking at an engine upgrade, taking the one from SpiderMonkey (it generates machine code using our existing JIT) or upgrading PCRE to something newer. There are other options too.
