User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 Firefox/3.5.4 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4pre) Gecko/20090915 Thunderbird/3.0b4 When an unread message is selected in the message list and the mouse is moved over the preview pane or the partially loaded message is scrolled while external content is still loading, the preview pane will lose focus once the message finishes loading. The preview pane goes blank, and the selected message will once again be marked unread, even if the selected time interval (0) before the message is marked read has passed. Another previously read message in the message list will be selected and that message will display in the preview pane. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1.Select unread message in message list. 2.Begin scrolling partially loaded message in preview pane. 3. Actual Results: Message finishes loading in preview pane, then the pane goes blank. Another previously read message is selected in the message list and that message is displayed in the preview pane. The unread message that was originally selected is again marked as unread. Expected Results: The message should have finished loading and remained displayed in the preview pane. It should be marked as read in the message pane.
When this happens are there any messages in Tools -> Error console ? How do you view your message list ? Threaded ? Unread ? Threads with unread ?
The message list is sorted by date, not threaded, all mail not just unread. The following appeared in the error console following the most recent occurrance (this time it lost focus but did not mark the message as unread again as it usually has in the past): 2009-11-03 11:07:39 gloda.ds.pch ERROR PostCommitHandler callback (undefined:150) threw: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004003 (NS_ERROR_INVALID_POINTER) [nsIMsgDBHdr.setUint32Property]" nsresult: "0x80004003 (NS_ERROR_INVALID_POINTER)" location: "JS frame :: file:///Applications/Thunderbird.app/Contents/MacOS/modules/gloda/indexer.js :: anonymous :: line 150" data: no]
interesting, but the above console msg is unrelated. i would think this is a duplicate

Every time, this happens? Or sometimes? I would suspect something like auto compaction coming along and compacting the underlying folder, but autocompaction would mostly happen after a delete, and you would have to have turned it on. If you have turned it on, and turned off the warning prompt, what's your compact threshhold?
I don't remember if this was a default or if I turned it on, but it was turned on and the threshold set at 100 KB. I have now turned it off to see if this prevents this behavior.
I'd recommend 1000 or 2000KB or more. The default is turned off. Oh, and are you using the smart folders inbox, or your normal per-account inbox? If the former, this is probably a dup and fixed in 3.1

Did not see the behavior again after turning off compaction. Have since upgraded to an Intel MacBook Pro. I would consider this a product of incorrect settings and an incredibly slow Mac, not an actual bug in the software. As the one who filed the original report, I consider this closed. Thanks for your assistance.
Summary: preview pane loses focus and selected message is again marked unread → preview pane loses focus and selected message is again marked unread with auto compact enabled
