Basically, if I have Thunderbird open, and the Lightning tab selected, it would be nice if somewhere on the window there was a notification if I had new mail. For example, a great place would be on the mail tab at the bottom left - just put the number of unread emails in bold (#) like there is next to the mailboxes on the mail view. 

I've checked through as many searches as I could think of, but I'd be surprised if this isn't a duplicate. If it is, sorry, but I tried.

This isn't something we want to fix in Calendar Land. Try searching for a such bug in the Thunderbird product please.

I don't see how this is thunderbird and not lightning - it's definitely a feature that would be a part of lightning. Thunderbird doesn't need more mail notifications - lightning does.
