Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091109 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.5.5 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091109 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.5.5 I have a bug in the search bar to the right of the url bar. that highlights the 1st 2 characters typed, and can't type beyond them. Also, this happens in the URL box too. Using Firefox 3.0.14 on Ubuntu 9.04 To reproduce: have manually changed "browser.urlbar.ClickSelectsAll=True" in "about:config" (this is the only setting I have changed) Happens when: 1. After my screensaver has kicked in during any given session. If I then start to type in the search bar (set to google), after i type in 2 characters they automatically highlight, then the 3rd character I type removes the highlighted characters, and becomes the 1st character. So I cannot type in more than 2 characters in the search bar. To Fix, I have to close Firefox and re-start, but happens again if my screensaver comes on. Or, I can minimize and restore the Firefox application Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Start Firefox 2.Go to about:config and set to true, browser.urlbar.ClickSelectsAll 3.Restart Firefox 4.Allow screensaver to kick in 5.Try to type something in the search bar or URL address bar. Actual Results: The text you type allows you type about one or two chars but it will highlight your text making you overwrite what you just typed Expected Results: It should allow you to type in the boxes and have a drop down list to aid in entry. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/428703

I was not able to reproduce this with Firefox 3.5.5 on Ubuntu 9.10 in a VirtualBox VM. I read through the associated Ubuntu reports and they didn't lead me to steps to reproduce that worked. Are there any related error in the error console when this happens? Is this reproducible in safe mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode Thanks for the report
I was not able to reproduce in safe mode. But I did see that Firefox must be in full screen for it to happen and as mentioned earlier, browser.urlbar.ClickSelectsAll has to be set to true. If I set browser.urlbar.ClickSelectsAll to false, then the issue does not appear.

I cannot reproduce it in full screen (View > Full screen) either and I tried with the preference in both states as there were reports on Ubuntu forums that they had problems either way. It could be because I'm running in a VM? Another difference is that I'm running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091109 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.5.5 Was there anything related in the error console?
Nothing in the error console. If there's anything else I can provide, please advise. I would love to see this fixed.

I can confirm that I have experienced this behaviour on multiple systems running Fedora 12 and Firefox 3.6.1-1 from the fc13 repository - and it's driving me crazy! Please let me know what information I can provide to help track this bug down.

It may happen only when Compiz desktop effects are enabled.

Sure sounds like a dupe of bug 507269.
