The new what's related panel is horrible. MozillaZine has a great new sidebar
panel that is ready to replace it, if someone see's fit to do so. The panel is
located at http://www.mozillazine.org/sidebar/sidebar.xul, and can be added from
http://www.mozillazine.org/sidebar/.

Please accept the change. Please also remove What's related completely from
Mozilla (it is shipped locally - see local-panels.rdf (or similar)).

The appearance is bad enough. The link is worse. Alexa is owned by Amazon.com.
Software patents place open source projects in danger, and Amazon has allready
shown that they will misuse the horked US patent system. (1 click shopping
patent). I'd prefer the Netscape links to anything from Amazon.
------- Additional Comments From Ben Bucksch 2000-10-01 10:51 -------
amazon? It has showed in the past that is unethnical. Not only with software
patents, but also with selling user data, which is relevant here. I suggest
removing it from the shippping options and leave it up to Netscape to provide it
as additional net-based panel.
We can reconsider adding "What's related", when we have a panel that queries
another provider (e.g. dmoz.org). This should be possible without server-side
support.

Reassigning 50 Sidebar bugs to Matt. I was told this was going to be done
shortly about two months ago, but it clearly hasn't been. I think that's long
enough for all these bugs to remain assigned to nobody.

Can we get this in, please? Netscape obviously doesn't care about bug 53239,
which is a privacy violation.

I can check this in. Sorry our team here as been trying to figure out the
what's related story. Alexa checked what's related into the tree so that
mozilla would have what's related. Netscape actually has their own different
panel of what's related.
So if we want mozilla not to have what's related functionality then I will be
glad to kill it. I don't think because amazon donated this code is a good
reason to check code out of the tree. Lets make sure this is the right thing.
I think adding the mozillazine pane is a different bug.
We can have both, none, or just one.
If it does stay in i agree we need to fix the privacy bug.

Matt, thanks for responding.
> Netscape actually has their own different panel of what's related.
Interesting.
> I don't think because amazon donated this code is a good
> reason to check code out of the tree.
It's not because Amazon donated the code, it's because the code sends data to (a
subsidary of) Amazon. Since there are reasonable doubts about the integrity of
Amazon, this is a reason to remove it from the default panels. We could leave
the code in the tree, however, so somebody can write a panel that fetches data
from a more trusted source.
> Alexa checked what's related into the tree so
> so that mozilla would have what's related.
We had a What's related before already, see bug 50763.
It seems to me here are the options:
1. Check in old style what's related. Based on Netscape what's related.
2. Leave in Alexa's what's related. Fix the privacy bug.
3. Kill what's related in Mozilla.
Privacy is an issue with what's related. No matter what info get's sent
to Alexa, old style, new style, any style. We just limit it and that
is why we have bug 53239. In this case. Once it is open it still
sends domain names when you close it.
netscape would have alexa what's related except business people told us no
and made us rip it out. it's still an ongoing issue and that is why I haven't
done anything for what's related. We still might have a plan to drastically
improve what's related and i would check this into the mozilla tree.

I vote for 2, if we can fix the privacy issues. The Alexa panel was cool.

The privacy bug is known since half a year and still exists. That's why I think,
we shoudl at least disable it from panels that are activated (shown in the
sidebar) by default. The user could still add it using "Customize...". This
would reduce the instances of the problem.

ben,
I marked bug 53239 help wanted. This is specific to mozilla and not netscape.
It would be great to get this fixed by someone in the community especially
since it is a privacy concern. If it is not fixed by beta I will pull the
panel.

landing more features in the last week of a milestone is bad.
lets shoot for early 0.9.2. unsetting the target milestone
until someone can get a good estimate on if 0.9.1 makes sense
and can be achived.

Why did you change this bug to assigned alpatel415? Don't do that unless it's
assigned to you, which this is not.
