(Keywords: hang, Whiteboard: [gs][see https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Shutdown_Hang])
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091201 Firefox/3.5.6
Build Identifier: version 1.0.6 (20050716)
This relates to Thunderbird 3.0rc1 running on Windows XP Home Edition SP3
When I close the program the process "thunderbird.exe" is still running if I check by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and check under Processes.
I have to manually shut it down to be able to start Thunderbird again.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run Thunderbird
2. Exit program
3. Attempt to re-start program later
4. Won't start
5. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL
6. Kill Thunderbird process
7. Wait a moment
8. Successfully re-start application
9. Repeat until thoroughly annoyed
Actual Results:
I end up figuring out how to report the bug, which others have reported
http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/thunderbird_exe_process_does_not_close_when_i_close_thunderbird
but apparently not here
Expected Results:
Program and process should exit gracefully on close of window and re-start without ado.

please provide info for shutdown hangs:
1. cpu usage - is it high (pegged), zero, low, or other?
2. run netstat in a dos command window (or Mac equivalent) - how many
connections are shown to your ldap server and (if imap) to your mail server?
3. if you are running lightning/calendar extension, does the shutdown hang happen without lightning?
and please reference:

is that for the thunderbird task only, or for the entire PC.
what we need to know is for the task only, as sown in task manager

is that what netstat reports?

OBSERVATION : (upon amd 64-bit)
If I start Thunderbird from a shell, it terminates it's processes.
Afterwards, it also terminates them when e.g. started from KDE control button !
(No additional enlighting messages from the shell, unfortunately.)

"Me too" from Windows 2000 SP4 pt-BR and Thunderbird Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; pt-BR; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20100111 Lightning/1.0b1 Thunderbird/3.0.1, with Lightning 1.0b1, Google Calendar provider 0.6b1, Sameplace 0.9.4.2009063011 and xmpp4moz 0.7.2.2009063010.
Answering questions from https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Shutdown_Hang :
CPU is zero and RAM usage is around 50MB. Global search and indexing is enabled. My only account is POP3. No sleep or hibernate. Using online.
It happened some times. From these, I could rerun TB in some. I can't tell what caused it to hang or not.
But then, I ran Thunderbird in safe mode and it stopped hanging - even after I ran it again in normal mode. Tested a couple times, process closing OK. Everything within the last, say, half hour. During this time, no update seems to have occurred and the computer wasn't restarted, asleep or hibernating.
Since it didn't happen again, I'll owe you the netstat stuff.
Hope this helps someone. I got no clue.
I have found an issue that might be at least one cause for the problem - see my bug report https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=544748 .
Basically it seems to happen if TB fails to load something from an IMAP server (probably because of another TB bug) for printing, and you close the (stuck) print dialog.
If I go into offline mode, then the process closes properly.
I have windows 7 x64, if that makes a diference.

ssj, are you still hangig on shutdown? please provide results of netstat -a ...
It's not clear that the cause of issue for the reporter of http://gsfn.us/t/n5uk is the same, but tentatively linking them up.
Emerson, are you still shutting down clean?
(philippp's bug has been duped)

I tested it today with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; pt-BR; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 Lightning/1.0b1 Thunderbird/3.0.4 and it shut off OK in normal mode.

Whats the status on this bug?
I am having the same issue.
Do you need anymore information to help solve this problem?
Comment 12•14 years ago

Brian, The status is nowheresville :)
Note - In this bug, we should be keying on the EXACT description of ssj's hang, but I think the description is slightly incomplete in that it is not stated whether client netstat reports thunderbird has an open imap connection. in any event ...
All,
please use https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Shutdown_Hang which will help you determine a list of symptoms. Use this to see if there is another bug that matches your symptoms:
* If there is, then close this bug as a duplicate of the other bug
* If there is not, then post your list here.
Thanks

I have been experiencing this bug less and less frequently, having done nothing to eradicate it nor to exacerbate it, and it's now to the point I rarely have it happen anymore. It DOES still occur, however.
Next time it does, I will provide the requested netstat screen information.
When the tb exe is 'running' but dead, it shows zero CPU use. If that helps.

I have the same problem. Most of the time when I exit Thunderbird 3.1 and Lightning 1.0b2, I have to kill the "thunderbird.exe" process in the Windows Task Manager otherwise Thunderbird won't restart.
I run Win7. In my set up, one account is IMAP and the other is POP.
With netstats, once Thunderbird is exited, i have :
TCP 192.1xx.x.xx:49xxx mozorg01:https CLOSE_WAIT
TCP 192.1xx.x.xx:49xxx mozorg01:https CLOSE_WAIT
TCP 192.1xx.x.xx:57xxx mozorg01:https CLOSE_WAIT
TCP 192.1xx.x.xx:61xxx mozorg01:https CLOSE_WAIT
Cheers,
CAM

Can anyone confirm if this is still an issue using thunderbird-3.1.5? I have not been able to duplicate it on windows or linux in a while.

Does "in a while" mean you stopped seeing this starting with v3.1.5? Or some older version?
I don't know of anything that's been fixed in this area. See also https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Shutdown_Hang which has been updated

This problem hasn't happened to me in months.
I can't say it's gone but I can say ... it hasn't happened in a long enough period of time I forget the last time it happened.
Something changed. I am not complaining.
If it occurs again I'll try and capture ... something ... in the way of diagnostics, but I can't promise what I'd get will be of any help.

It happens to me everyday in conjunction with that TB stops getting new IMAP mail from my server, probably due to a fight over mailbox lock with my iPhone client. When I try to close TB, the process hangs with 25%CPU, used to be 50%CPU on my old dual core machine, now quad core.

SSJ, yeah, if you reliably hung in the past but don't now, then we should probably close this bug. (and it looks like about half the people who previously commented can no longer reproduce) Also, at comment 13 you were using v3.0.x? And in comment 17 using v3.1.4 or 3.1.5?
Bengt, your issue is not this bug because you have relatively high cpu. see https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Shutdown_Hang for info about diagnosing your issue.
Anyone else who still sees a problem should have a look at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Shutdown_Hang and then match up to a different, existing bug report based on the key indicators of cpu usage, netstat results, etc.
Summary: Thunderbird process does not stop on program exit/shutdown, zero cpu → Thunderbird process does not stop on program exit/shutdown, zero to very low cpu

This happens for me as well quite often. I am running Ubuntu 14.04. I feel that it has to do with the internet connection. For example, when I am starting TB while connected via a VPN client (or not at all). Returning to normal internet connection sometimes causes troubles as an email cant be delivered - at not even saved as draft. Then I have to kill the process as even a restart won't work.

I use Windows 7 Home Premium, TBird 38. TBird process does not close upon exit and cannot be terminated with Process Explorer or any other program.
