Details
User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.10
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20100130 Shredder/3.0.2pre
Selecting a word (e.g. an emailed password) by 1. Dragging the cursor or 2. double-clicking the word, and then copying the word by 1. right-click, copy or 2. Edit menu > Copy appends one seemingly extraneous space to the clipboard, visible after pasting.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. send an email to yourself formatted for Plain Text. Send the following three lines (with one carriage return after each line):
apple
banana
orange
2. Receive the email, and then:
2A. double-click the 2nd line and select "Copy" from the "Edit" menu, OR
2B. select the word on the 2nd line by positioning your cursor in the leftmost gutter, clicking and dragging to select the word while moving right until the "I-beam" has been replace with a pointer cursor. Select "Copy" from the "Edit" menu.
3. Paste the clipboard contents in Notepad or any other text field.
Actual Results:
A space (Hex 0x20) is appended to the pasted word.
"banana "
Expected Results:
Selected text with no appended space.
This bug is especially egregious for novice computer users that may be attempting to copy a generated password from an email and paste it into a password text field that replaces text with asterisks (*) or other shadowed characters.
The user will not immediately be notified that a space has been appended to the selected and copied password, and the password will fail. Since copy/paste operations are OS-generalized behaviors, subsequent troubleshooting of the resulting error and discovery of cause may generate frustrations towards Thunderbird and the Mozilla platform when copy/paste does not work as expected.
Tested with a clean build nightly on Win XP VM

the modality seems different:
524975 - text copied from HTML adds spaces for non printing items
444626 - text copied from excel spread sheet adds spaces
537957 - text copied from table adds non printing items
I saw 2 of those, but figured they didn't relate to plain text copied from thunderbird (plain text copies fine from Firefox)
