I am using the french version and I don't know the correct terms of the english version.
In the page "General", at the step "when a new mail arrives"I choosed : "moving icon" and "play a sound".
None of these 2 signals works.

I had no problem: *.wav files was played OK

By "moving icon" do you mean "Afficher un avertissement" in French version? which is translated in English version by "Show an alert"

Where the *.wav file is located? Hard Drive ? USB Drive ?....

Do you have any "Message filters" that flag all messages to status "Read"?
In French: Outils/Filtre de Messages.. : Statut est Lu

Could you please try to start ThunderBird in safe mode

Maybe your problem is coming from an extension.

If problem is not coming back in safe mode, could you please give us list of
