An error occurred sending mail: Unable to authenticate to SMTP server post.demon.co.uk. The server does not support authentication (SMTP-AUTH) but you have chosen to use authentication. Untick 'Use name and password' for that server or contact your service provider." I have not chosen to use au8thentification. The SERVER Settings page of the account details shows the server as POP3.Demon.... - the incoming server and shows no outgoimg server. Security setting is "none" and use secure authentification is unticked. I have tried setting up other accounts, and uninstalling and re-installing but I cannot get rid of the account that is there. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.create email 2.click SEND 3. Actual Results: receive: Sending of message failed. An error occurred sending mail: Unable to authenticate to SMTP server post.demon.co.uk. The server does not support authentication (SMTP-AUTH) but you have chosen to use authentication. Untick 'Use name and password' for that server or contact your service provider. Expected Results: sent the message I am pretty green so I am not sure if I have gone about reporting this correctly but I have done my best.I would appreciate help - I have used Mozilla for some time but I can get neither program Thunderbird or Firefox to work with Vista.
I don't know the TB UI but it should be similar to the Seamonkey UI. Open the Mail&News Account settings, select "outgoing server" on the left side. The outgoing server settings are outside of your pop3 Account setting. Select your SMTP server, select Edit, untick the "use Name.." field
The "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" setting is all the way down in the Account Settings, you may need to scroll down the list to reach it. If you've set up your account initially with Thunderbird 2.0 or earlier, then updated to 3.0, the settings were carried over from your old profile. The problem is that 2.0 has always set up accounts to use authentication for the outgoing server, but then silently ignored it if the server didn't request any. The implementation in 3.0 is a bit more picky, considering this an error now, thus many users run into this issue if their provider's server doesn't need authentication (bug 522633 and related). You don't say if you've updated from 2.0 or if this was a 3.0 installation from scratch. If the latter is the case, this would indicate a different but related problem with the new account-setup wizard.
But thank you Thunderbird is sending email for me now(In reply to comment #1) > I don't know the TB UI but it should be similar to the Seamonkey UI. > Open the Mail&News Account settings, select "outgoing server" on the left side. > The outgoing server settings are outside of your pop3 Account setting. > Select your SMTP server, select Edit, untick the "use Name.." field
(In reply to comment #2) Many thanks - Matti's answer sorted the problem for me - you have exlained it. can you tell me how I import my old messages, address book(s) etc from my old machine. Thank you both again PeterC > The "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" setting is all the way down in the Account > Settings, you may need to scroll down the list to reach it. > If you've set up your account initially with Thunderbird 2.0 or earlier, then > updated to 3.0, the settings were carried over from your old profile. You are welcome. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder for instructions, and please ask in the forums if you need help with the transfer. Since this apparently was a new profile with a new setup, my assumption stated in bug 534604 comment #9 seems to apply. Blake, do you want to treat this as a separate case for the account manager or see it combined with bug 534604?
Sorry, I didn't see that you already opened a bug for the autoconfig case...

I am attempting to set up a new computer with Windows 7, Firefox 3.6.6, and a new installation of Thunderbird 3.1. I also get an error message: "Sending of message failed. Unable to authenticate to SMTP server smtp.nts-online.net. It does not support authentication (SMTP-AUTH) but you have chosen to use authentication. Please change the 'Authentication method' to 'None' in the 'Account Settings | Outgoing Server (SMTP)' or contact your email provider for assistance." I have repeatedly opened the SMTP Settings and selected "None" "Password sent insecurely" as well as deleting and re-entering SMTP settings. Same result with any message sending try.
