User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20100111 Thunderbird/3.0.1 I unclick the box for accounts setting to NOT check for new emails when i startup thunderbird. i ONLY use TB for sending emails (gmail) because i like the ease of use plus for sending my emails w/images attached, i can drag&drop from explorer. ;-) i likes that. whenever i DO start TB, it checks for emails and i do NOT like/want that. i check and it is still set for NOT uploading any new emails. whats up with that? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. i unclick the box.. dont know exactly as i dont want TB started as it keeps DLing new emails 2. when i startup TB, it still checks for new emails - not the result i want 3.i open a new email to compose and close TB faster than you can say hot dawg Expected Results: i do NOT want emails to be DLed. i have the box UNclicked so i do not get emails. with the box checked, it should NOT be DLing any emails... the version i had previously, worked fine. i looked at ur site and cannot get an older version, tho i love how the new acct configuration works!! thanks for dat!! :-D
I'm unable to reproduce this on Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20100111 Lightning/1.0b2pre Thunderbird/3.0.1 ID:20100111101938 -- does this also occur in Safe Mode (https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode)? Also, please check to make sure the other box, Check for messages every:, is not checked, as it would download automatically at intervals.

hiya and thanks for your timely reply. i appreciate that well-knowing you guys hopefully don't have billions of bugs coming in from all over the world!!! ;-) YES, i do NOT have the option checked at all for the interval for checking (i know of that from stupid outlook and early TB days). in fact, i even have the settings for my gmail to ONLY use the IMAP and not forward ANY email at all. when i conside this, it really surprises me that my emails are still coming in with all POP mail fwding NOT enabled. as i stated, i only use it for sending emails with fotos to friends - so much easier drag&drop... ;-) thanks again!
this attachment is sent regarding my problem with when TB starts up, it checks for any new emails. i have my gmail configured for NO FWDING of pop mail (still does it). in addition, as you can see from this screen capture, the appropriate buttons are NOT checked and still the emails come in. can i just DL an older version and use that? i am looking.... thanks

(In reply to comment #2) > as i stated, i only use it for sending emails with fotos to friends - so much easier drag&drop... ;-) If so, why you need to define IMAP accout of Tb? To send a mail, required definition is (a) an identity(mail address usable as From:), and (b) SMTP server definition for server name and user name. (1) Delete the Gmail IMAP account, because it's already defined. SMTP definition for of Gmail's SMTP is not deleted. So you needn't define SMTP server again. (2) At any account of Tb, "Manage Identities", add an identity. - Select SMTP definition for of Gmail's SMTP - As Gmail's SMTP and Gmail automatically saves sent mail in "Sent Mail" ([Gmail]/Sent Mail when accessed via Gmail IMAP using Tb) no need to save copy of sent mail. - If you want to save draft temporary, you can use any local mail folder as folder for draft, sent, .... (3) If you need to use other Gmail's mail address as From:, you don't need to define SMTP server at Tb's account definition. [ Register new mail address to first account of Gmail ] - Obtain other Gmail account - Register the second mail address as "mail address usable as From:" at Settings of Gmail's Web interface. Needless to say, you can define SMTP server with user name for second Gmail account and do (2) for the second Gmail account. Before adding more comments of complaint, check auto-sync related setting, and IDLE related seting, please. (a) Syncronization & Storage : Message Synhcronizing. If unchecked, auto-sync automatically/periodically downloads mails in folder of "offline use=on" (folder properties/synchronization). If checked, auto-sync automatically/periodically downloadeds mails too. As change from "unchecked to checked" sets "offline use=on" of all mail foldes of the IMAP account, auto-sync is usually enabled for all mail folders, unless user intentionall set "offline use=off". (b) Server setting/Advanced, [?] use IDLE... If IDLE is used, and if UDLE is active for a mail folder, new mail is notified from server, then downloadd. Above (a) is new feature of Tb 3, and is enabled as default. And, it's absolutely independent feature from "check new messages upon startup/every NN minutes". Another cause of unexpected server access: Session Restore, which is also a new feature of Tb 3. Session restore opens mail folder upon start up of Tb, then Tb connects to server and knows about new mails. This unwanted-connection issue is already processed by other bug.
Other way to prohibit IMAP server access in your case. Change server name of IMAP account to imap.gmail.com.non-existent. If you'll be successful to kill unwanted/unexpected server access, no connection error will be displayed, unless you click the IMAP account.
