Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100218 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6 Build Identifier: Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 Both Thunderbird 2 & 3 have a quick search bar which looks in the sender or subject. When it the Sent items folder, it makes more sense to look for recipient or subject, rather than the standard query. This could be considered as a wishlist item, but from a certain point of view one could also treat the issue as a bug. Reproducible: Always
Atanas, please upgrade to latest Thunderbird http://www.getthunderbird.com TB 2 actually has the desired behaviour of swapping sender vs. recipient if only one of them is selected (albeit the UI is incorrect, but test it, it works!) TB 3, I don't know. We might want to check and/or fix. TB 3.1 filter bar has lost that magic behaviour, which is a regression filed in bug 586729.
