Not true. The only situation in which the behaviors of the Backspace and Delete
keys should ever differ from each other is when editing text. So if Delete
deletes a bookmark, Backspace should too. Reopening.

I've confirmed this with a 2000101010 branch build on linux RH 6. On my Mac the 'backspace'
key IS the delete key (or so it's labeled) anyway, this does not repro w/ the same builds on Mac
so I'm resetting platorm to just 'PC'.
reporter, what build is this bug originally reported against? (this info needs to always be in bug report)

Confirming this bug in MacOS 9.2.1 build 20011001. In mailnews, the backspace
key works, but delete does not. In bookmarks, the delete key works, but
backspace does not. At the very least, these two components should agree.
Beyond that minimal fix, I agree with mpt that both keys should do the same
thing, except in text.

Paul Chen is now taking Bookmarks bugs. For your convenience, you can filter
email notifications caused by this by searching for 'ilikegoats'.

If a button on the keyboard is labeled, "Backspace" why would it be safe to assume that it means delete? Many systems use backspace to
navigate back. Don't take buttons out of their context. We certainly don't need to make delete any more convenient than it already is.
the text behavior is fine because it is established, but there's no real user benefit from making backspace=delete in lists. it would only
contribute to more accidental deletions.
Mac people who've migrated to a PC, or are using a PC keybd on their mac, would be the only concern for consistency. But these people
are also a very small minority in the scheme of things.
1) the backspace key should not delete items in bookmark lists, only delete should
2) the backspace should never be assumed to equal delete

I believe the backspace key (which is labeled "delete" on the Mac) should delete
a message or bookmark. I think this is how it has worked in 4.x and previous
versions of Netscape.
There is no forward-delete ("del") key on a PowerBook keyboard, so if you don't
support the backspace ("delete") key, there will be no way for PowerBook users
to delete bookmarks using the keyboard.

james i agree with you - the mac doesn't have a backspace key so of course, the
delete key should delete.

This discussion closely parallels the one happening right now in Bug 102535
(which I suggest is a more appropriate place for arguing Del vs. Bksp).
This bug is set for platform==PC, OS==All. Is it relevent to discuss Mac
keyboards here?

The delete key (the Mac analogue to the backspace key on a PC keyboard) does not
delete bookmarks on the Mac. So this bug (as I understand it) applies to the Mac
tool.

Well, then please change Platform to "All"
