The artefacts are gone when I switch from Thunderbird to another application and back, even when that other application does not overlap the TB window. This appears to happen only when Lightning is installed. It doesn't happen in safe mode. The PNG file linked to in the URL shows the problem. Reproducible: Always
It doesn't happen in a message viewer window either, only in the main window.
