When a user adds a new bookmark (Ctrl-D), the default folder should be 'Unsorted Bookmarks', not 'Bookmarks Menu'. Thus, the user can easily find all the latest bookmarks and move them later to the appropriate folder.
Currently, there is no option to override this arbitrary selection.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Bookmark any new Web page
2. The default folder is still 'Bookmarks Menu'
3.
Actual Results:
The default folder is 'Bookmarks Menu', and there is no way to override it.

Expected Results:
The default folder should be 'Unsorted Bookmarks'

This bug has been present in all Firefox 3.x versions, and still has not been fixed.
if you click the star the bookmark goes automatically to unsorted, if you use CTRL-D then you open the panel, that means that you want to specify a destination, thus the default is the menu.
to clarify these are 2 different actions:
- "Please remember this page" (goes to unsorted)
- "Please bookmark this page where I will specify in the dialog" (default is menu)

Somewhat OT, but:
Does that expectation also apply to "right click > Bookmark this link", since the starring method isn't available in that case? I'd like "default to unsorted" or maybe "remember last choice", but bookmarking a link vs a page would be a different bug in any case.
Yes, the problem ocurs only when you want to bookmark links ("right
click > Bookmark this link). It would be very helpful if the default
folder was also "Unsorted Bookmarks" in this case, so that all new unsorted
bookmarks are in the same folder. Currently, every user must change it
for every bookmarked link!
This bug has not been fixed in Firefox 4.0 beta 1.
Moreover, the user cannot override the default folder.
Version: unspecified → 3.6 Branch
Reporter -> Is this still and issue with Firefox 9.0.1?
This problem still exists in Firefox 10 Beta if you right-click a hyperlink and try to bookmark this link. If the user wants to temporarily add all new bookmarks to the Unsorted Bookmarks folder, he/she has to override the Default folder (Bookmarks Toolbar) every time a new bookmark is added via right-clicking a hyperlink!!!
It should be very easy to specify the 'user-specified' default folder.
Version: 3.6 Branch → 10 Branch
If you right-click any hyperlink and select 'Bookmark this link', the default folder for the new bookmark will be "Bookmarks Menu", not "Unsorted Bookmarks" !!!

Why have you marked it as "UNCONFIRMED" ???
The default folder is the "Bookmarks Menu" because the new bookmark dialog comes up. I think the problem here is with the concept of "unsorted bookmarks" rather than any implementation issue; different people treat the folder differently and want different behavior from Firefox. Maybe it would be nice to be able to change the default behavior.
I prefer saving all my bookmarks to the unsorted bookmarks section by default, irrespective of how it is saved. Can an add-on at least be released which allows us to alter where the bookmarks are saved by default?
I think this is a valid enhancement request.

Everywhere now defaults to unsorted bookmarks. Bug 1412263 is on file and has the most recent discussions about allowing to select the default location. Therefore, I'm going dupe this forward to that one.
