User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100423 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.3 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100423 Thunderbird/3.0.4 Thunderbird loses information how to handle certain mimetypes, e.g. PDF, from time to time. Will ask then only to save every attachment, not even asking what to do with the (unknown) file type so I can't add new mimetype handlers. Also mimeTypes.rdf contains no more mimetype handling directives anymore, only the default content you get when deleting mimeTypes.rdf and restart thunderbird. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start Thunderbird 2. Menu Edit/Settings, register attachments 3. List of mimetypes is empty I had to copy the mimeTypes.rdf from a second computer to get thunderbird to handle the attachments again.
Any idea or clues on what might have caused this ?
This sounds very much like an old bug that I thought was fixed.
Sorry, I couldn't figure out when this happens -- partly because I don't open PDFs every day so the mimetypes.rdf can be empty for days before I'll notice. Which "fixed" bug were you speaking of, David? Maybe I should have a look at that report to compare it with mine. Greetings, Mirko
bug 476400 is the one I was thinking of, but searching bugzilla for mimetypes.rdf shows a few other possibilities.
On browsing several user forums, I find complaints to the same effect for versions of Thunderbird from 1.0 up to this day. Today, it happened to me, apparently upon installing the updates to TB 3.1.13 [or maybe even to Firefox 6.0.1, which I also did today?] under Ubuntu 11.04. It appears that some update routine deletes the file mimeTypes.rdf and replaces it by an empty one.
Severity: normal → S3

Well, here we are, 13 years later. This is still a problem. I want to make a suggestion.

The problem seems to stem from a missing mimeTypes.rdf file, which (at least sometimes) doesn't get created or pulled along through an upgrade to thunderbird.

Maybe create "add" and "delete" buttons for the mime types list, so they can be added manually (and create the rdf file if needed). Probably some corrections to the upgrade process need to be made, and possibly also for new profile creations. But, in any case, it would be nice to have this simple enhancement to the mime types interface in settings for those corner cases where something goes bump during an upgrade, or for any other reason. This would likely be good for all the mozilla products.
