User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0C)
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.11) Gecko/20100711 Thunderbird/3.0.6
Sending the same message with an attachment two times, once encrypted, once not: when the messages are received, Detach and Delete both appear on Menu File Attachments sub-menu and on the right click context menu in both the reader window and in a separate message window when the clear message is received.
But both choices are grayed out in each place when the encrypted message is received.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a message to self with an attachment.
2. Send encrypted; receive.
3. Look for Detach and Delete on the Menu File Attachments submenu and on the attachment pane context menu.
4. Open the message in a window and repeat step 3.
Actual Results:
Detach and Delete are both grayed out in all cases.
Expected Results:
Detach and Delete are not grayed out and can be used. (Just as, when the message is not encrypted, both Detach and Delete are not grayed out and can be used.)
Same behavior (more complex, including Delete All and further attachment sub-menus) when there is more than one attachment: Detach and Delete both grayed out everywhere.
(On my machine, the Profiles directory and the Mail sub-directory are on a partition encrypted by TrueCrypt. I have not attempted to recreate with a different profile on a drive not encrypted.)
.......
Why major? The ability to detach messages is important for users with many large attachments that must be managed outside the e-mail reader. See, as an example, the recent comments to
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=359319 .
Yes, files can be saved instead of detached.
(Of course, folks more in the know about this choice might classify this differently. And should if I don't know what 'major' means.)

Yes, that's a known issue. It's not implemented, thus the respective menu items are disabled if the message is encrypted.
