Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0C) Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.23) Gecko/20090812 Thunderbird/2.0.0.23 Mnenhy/0.7.5.0 I frequently open and close the main TB window while working and often still have an email window open fro a previous session. When re-opening the main TB window the Message Pane gets automatically turned on. When TB opens normally ( i.e. when it has been fully closed off including all message windows) then the message pane is correctly turned off. Something about relaunching TB while a message window is still open is causing the Message Pane to get turned back on. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open Thunderbird. 2. Ensure Message Pane is off (F8 to toggle) 3. Double click on any email to open it in a separate window 4. Close main TB window 5. Reopen main TB window with your usual shortcut 6. Message pane will now be re-enabled Actual Results: Message Pane gets re-enabled Expected Results: Message pane should remain off as per program preferences

Can you try a build from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-comm-1.9.2/ and let me know if it fixes your issue ?
Apologies, there is the build number after running that correction:- Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100802 Lightning/1.0b2 Thunderbird/3.1.2 I'll try a build from that branch and let you know.
It does indeed seem to resolve this issue. I'll attempt to mark as a duplicate.
