Transitions with gradients aren't supported yet, but when they are, it would make the app button look rather attractive. This will really aesthetics of Firefox, especially considering how some people got overexcited when Windows 7's start orb got a similar transition.
Bug 536540 and bug 574681 will need to land before this is added.

I agree we should match our other transitions when we are able to.

It does use gradients. But you could use animation of opening that menu.

The Firefox button is going to be removed in bug 863753.
