For all other occurrences, the problem goes away when (certain) extensions are disabled. Try starting TB in "Safe Mode": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode
Lightning extension caused a similar problem only on Mac. It has been fixed by changing some css properties for a button (the "today-pane" button) that the extension puts in the status bar. See Bug 547654.
Note, even when one starts in safe mode, one still gets the following warning: 2011-07-23 07:34:42.227 thunderbird-bin[260:1403] -deviceDeltaX is deprecated for NSScrollWheel. Please use -scrollingDeltaX.
Kleppten do you still see this problem? Decathlon, do you still see the lightning problem? See Bug > > 547654. Actually I never saw the problem because I don't use the Mac. I only reported the problem that seemed caused by something that changed in an anomalous way the message pane size. In bug 547654 it was the Lightning's today-pane button, but there are other reports, e.g. in the Mozilla Italia forum a very similar problem seemed caused by the addon Display Mail User Agent http://forum.mozillaitalia.org /index.php?topic=46875.msg302098#msg302098. A few days ago (14/12/2011 http://forum.mozillaitalia.org/index.php?topic=46875.msg349063#msg349063) the user "Winfox" says that the problem still appears in a random way, with no precise cause. He says that the only way to make the text readable is scrolling with the mouse wheel instead of scrolling with two fingers on the Mac's touch-pad.
iirc there is a different bug or two already filed about swip problems
