Why can't we hide Panorama from within the ctrl+space key handler?

For some reason, we can't hide the TabView UI directly (without a setTimeout) from within the option/ctrl+space key handler (even though it works fine for the escape key handler). We're using a setTimeout to get around this, but it would be nice to know exactly what is going on.

This appears to have only been a problem with the spacebar key combo; now that we've gone to command+e, it's not a problem.
