i run thunderbird in imap mode on an acer netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and since i'm always using it i have it autostart with my gnome session. most of the time, said netbook is docked at home and is less than five feet away from my wifi ap, and all is good. but when i go mobile, i may be booting up in a place where there isn't a familiar network, which means that thunderbird is going to pop up 2-4 alerts about connectivity that i have to clear once i do get connected to a hotspot. 

i feel that thunderbird needs to take a look at the system's network interface and/or routing table, and see if there's a net connection available, and if not to just sit quietly and not complain about something it can't change. iow, be more graceful about fluctuating network conditions on a mobile laptop/netbook.
