Details

Clicking on a news://server URL in Firefox causes Thunderbird to add an account for a (usually non-existant) server "news" with a subscription to the group "server" -- yes, the name of the NNTP-server is (mis)taken for a name of the desired group...

This is wrong... According to, for example, this link:

http://www.utoronto.ca/web/HTMLdocs/NewHTML/url_news.html

a server-less news-URL would look like news:group (no slashes).
I'm working on getting the news URIs to actually parse correctly, which should be handled in bug 226890 (in any case, I don't need a different bug for each specific case...).
