User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.11) Gecko/20101013 Ubuntu/10.10 (maverick) Firefox/3.6.11 Build Identifier: version 3.6.11 ubuntu 10.10 I'm suffering from 'Maximum number of clients reachedMaximum number of clients reachedError: cannot open display: :0.0' errors launching firefox and other X resource allocation problems on kde based apps due to thunderbird hogging this resources. Using command '$ sudo ls -1 /proc/`pidof X`/fd | wc -l' i've found that at the time firefox output the above error message the total handlers (fd's) allocated at that time were at '255'. Couldn't launch firefox or other apps. So i started closing running apps and looking again at the command above. For my surprise, and luckly, i've chosen thunderbird to be the first one to close, and voila, the command above output 77 whick means thunderbird was holding '255-77=178' connections without closing them. Restarting thunderbird and monitoring via above command, showed that it used just one or two resources. I use 'minimize to tray plus' extension and let it minimized for all day use. I think during 2 or 3 days opened, gets into this problem... I've two accounts registered on thunderbird: - IMAP + SSL/TLS on gmail (google) - IMAP no encryption to a corporate MS Exchange 2007 After 30 min of use thunderbird resources went up to 16. I've used the below command to find thunderbird X used resources: $ xwininfo -root -children|grep Thunderbird|wc -l Thanks for the support! Regards, Raine Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Let thunderbird minimized on ubuntu 10.10 linux 64-bit with kde desktop 4.5.2 running during many days and X connection (resources), 2. Or trying to figure out the internal X resource allocation leak. Actual Results: Can't launch any X application, not even xterminal Expected Results: Free X resources/connetions correctly with exhausting X resources pool Couln't find any thunderbird log nor even on '.thunderbird/' home directory nor in messages logfile or .xsessions-errors.
Just complementing the above post, i'll return in some days to post the listing from: $ xwininfo -root -children|grep Thunderbird

There is something to do with Popup manager...

Raine, Do you still see this issue? No other Thunderbird reports of this. In firefox I find bug Bug 362955 - Firefox makes X run out windows - and bug 263160 (which is mostly about iframes but pop ups are also mentioned)
