Currently Thunderbirds addressbook only has options to form a complete name using First and Last name. In the Netherlands, and probably other countries, full names are often like Peter van der Vorst, Arie van Straten, or Henk de Bruin. Right now you have to add the middlepart "van der", "van" or "de" in front of the last name, which for instance makes it harder to sort by last name. It would be nice to add a field with the middlename, so fullnames are formed by: first name + middlename (if present) + lastname.
(maybe dependent on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29106) Many countries use middle names http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_name In the VCARD specification the "middle name" can (optionally) be used for N-value if needed. However, there had been some discussion about the interpretation of that part. http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2426.txt http://www.w3.org/2002/12/cal/vcard-notes.html
