User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; he; rv:1.9.1.1) Gecko/20090715 Firefox/3.5.1 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; he; rv:1.9.1.1) Gecko/20090715 Firefox/3.5.1 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
(OCR = Optical Character Recognition)
Also, I have FF4 beta7 if it matters.
Well it's pretty simple:
After a page is rendered, usually I press Shift+Right Click (that's Babylon's OCR keyboard shortcut) on an unknown word, and a Babylon window pops out with that word.
*Babylon is just an example for a program that uses OCR.
Anyway, the Babylon window pops out indeed, but instead of the needed word, it brings up some random characters, usually a "." or a "`" (ignore brackets), sometimes it's one random character, sometimes a few.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open any page in Firefox, and choose a word you'd like to use OCR on.
2. try to use OCR.
Actual Results:
A random character like: `
Expected Results:
The actual word you've choosed.
btw I've posted it as a bug here and not on Babylon's site, because OCR works perfectly well on other browsers, for example sucky Chrome.
(And also, Babylon probably won't even look at my problem..)

To get it right:
The (known) Babylon App installs a (global? or by the User?) Extension for Firefox along and that does not work properly with Firefox 4 but does so with 3.5.x/3.6.x?
> *Babylon is just an example for a program that uses OCR.
What other Programs/Extensions did you experience the same Issue/Symptoms with?

Babylon doesn't install any extensions for Firefox.
The Babylon OCR is simply a piece of software that can identify text everywhere on the screen, and anywhere in the computer (for example on your desktop, in your documents, pdf files, other browsers, and many more places. sometimes it can even identify text within a photo).
Babylon is an example for a program that uses the OCR for translating the given text, but I bet there are other uses for it (So, about your question, I did not experience the same issue with other programs, and I can't come up with one now. I wrote that sentence to clarify that my issue is with the OCR handling, not Babylon (The OCR is pretty much the same way in most of today's software).
Also, Babylon with it's millions of users is probably the most popular software that uses OCR.
Anyway, what I think is, that there is a problem with how Firefox renders the webpages, when it's making the text inside them unable to distinguish (distinguish for the OCR of course, not the human eye).

Dupe of bug 410535?
Reporter – since the issue reported as fixed on 410535, please make sure you are using the latest version. If it still occurs to other users, maybe we would have to reopen 410535 instead.
This bug still occurs in FF4, starting beta 7, up to the current 10th.
Today a completely new version of Babylon was released (Babylon 9, up until now the newest ver. was 8.1.0).
I'll get it sometime in the next few days and report back here whether it works or not (Although I really doubt there will be any change, but what the heck.. worth a shot).
Babylon said it will be fixed when FF4 goes gold.
Hopefully no one will comment here until after February.

9.0.0 - still an issue.
Installed 9.0.2 - still an issue.
Installed the Babylon translator for Firefox (you can find it here: http://dl.babylon.com/site/files/bf/toolbar/babylon_plugin_ff_no_prompt.exe) - still an issue.

accidentally i found a temporary solution to this.
i don't know if this works for you but i hope so.
just select the word you want to translate in the Firefox 4 and instead of right-click+ctrl use the f10 button. Babylon will recognize the word and show you the translation.

Same problem with Lingoes (www.lingoes.net) even with their Firefox addon installed, OCR never work, only text selection if you enable in option.
Can we get some official Mozilla response about it?
Babylon 9.0.4 (r10) here and issue persists.

In http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=293577 Opera Users face the same Symptoms. Does disabling "Clear Type" make a Difference and/or Hardware Acceleration in Firefox?

No difference with Hardware Acceleration off, Clear Type either.

Today, the last version of Babylon (9.0.4) is compatible with Firefox 6.0 so you resolved the problem on Firefox.
But I must inform you that with Seamonkey 2.1 and after (latest 2.6), the problem is always present.

Indeed, Babylon Version 9.03 Compatibility with regard to Firefox 4/5 (and higher, I presume) is mentioned in their Release Notes: http://support.babylon.com/index.php?/News/NewsItem/View/5/babylon-903
Support for other Gecko Apps has to be provided by them too.
=> resolving WFM.

"WORKSFORME" is a little personal for who did it. The problem still!!! But only for Firefox x64. Not sure if it's the Babylon add-on's (need both two installed) fail or Firefox itself.
As Firefox 64 bits is not official yet, so I will agree with the closing of bug.

to recognise the OCR, i always employ some imaging sdk which contains such a function. i think it's really easy to use, you can have a try.
