User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; rv:2.0b7) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0b7 Build Identifier: Thunderbird 3.3a1 ID:20101116152258 I'm running the virtual folder test cases in the Litmus tests for Miramar 3.3 alpha 1. I had just completed step 1 and hovered the mouse over the newly created "Mozillazine" virtual folder. After a couple of seconds I get a yellow popup with black text that lists the subject for the new messages in the child folders of the preceding folder ("Misc"). I do not get it if I hover the mouse over normal folders that have new mail. It was 100% repeatable until I exited and ran 3.0.10 using the same profile. That moved that virtual folder several lines upwards (right after junk mail and before the first normal folder). I then ran Miramar again and it kept the virtual folder in that position, so the problem never occurs again. It had originally positioned the virtual folder as if it was a normal child folder, and alphabetically sorted it. The folder order had been inbox, drafts, sent items, junk mail, bugs, digests, misc (the folder hierarchy that had the new mail it listed), mozillazine, ..... Afterwards the order became inbox, drafts, sent items, junk mail, mozillazine, bugs , digests, misc, ...... Now its after the folders listed in copies & folders, and before the normal folders. Reproducible: Didn't try

One problem per bug submission... So if we have multiple virtual folders on a parent folder. We should not see a tooltip for new messages when hovering over a virtual folder whose criteria does no not apply. In fact we do see this notification for any parent folder message. This is misleading and ambiguous.

"In fact we do see this notification for any parent folder message." Not me. I don't remember ever seeing tooltips before on folders in the folder pane and I've been using Thunderbird since version 0.3. I have eight different email providers (aim, axigenmail, fastmail, gmail, Google Apps, gmx, hotmail and yahoo) and have tried to get tooltips with each. I have also created a new profile with a new prefs.js several times (like last week). I have never seen it on any PC's I installed Thunderbird on for friends and relatives. There are several features in Thunderbird such as "ask me where to save files" for attachments that must work for somebody, but normally don't work even if you run in safe mode. This is one of them. There was only one virtual folder. I was using the "all folders" view. Misc is a normal folder in a IMAP account with child and grand child folders that you can see using webmail.
No tooltips might be better than inappropriate tooltips ;) Here are my steps to reproduce: All folders view with several virtual folder children (I have 5-6 per account) Select some other folder. Wait for a new mail to arrive. The inbox turns blue as well as the virtual folder that applies. Hovering over any virtual folder gives me the new message tooltip This is with pop3 accounts not imap
