Site owner is (probably) Tara Shanian. +++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #607182 +++ Legal has requested that we take down the 5 years of firefox and Download Day forms which are part of spreadfirefox.com and delete the data. This bug will be just about taking down the forms and giving instructions to IT for deleting the data. Separate bug will be filed against IT for the delete.
A website archive blog post for retiring this site has been stubbed in at: http://blog.mozilla.com/website-archive/2010/12/07/5-years-of-firefox/ Also as a self-reminder, the subversion repo is available at: http://svn.mozilla.org/projects/fyfx/trunk
In addition to the screenshot of the site in the blog post, could we also link to the associated video on our YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/firefoxchannel#p/search/0/b-eTkAgkh2Y
Thanks David, I've added that link to the post. Is this site being retired or archived? Did we make a formal decision in the prior meeting? From what I recall, I believe we were going to look into whether this site was a part of the Spread Firefox codebase, or whether it was a separate code bases (It is in fact a separate code base) and go from there.
Re question in comment #3, I think we held off on a decision because of uncertainty with the code base. I'd say retiring is fine since the main content of the page is the video and it's available in the YouTube channel. I'm not the site owner though. From an earlier comment, looks like we should ask Tara.
Emailed Tara @ Dec.9 to determine if we can expunge the data from the mozilla5y.emails table.
Hey guys, just curious... is there a reason we're retiring it, vs. archiving it? I believe we did that with a few other campaign sites... I mean, no point in keeping the site around if most of the features and functionality is obsolete or disabled I suppose. But just wanted to know why we were keeping some around, and not others?
David B can give you the full story. The short version is that it's for privacy reasons, mainly - we don't want to be collecting data on old sites that aren't being actively maintained. Also, by archiving it it will still be publicly viewable, just not active. See http://website-archive.mozilla.org/mozillaservice.org/ as a reference.
Ok great. That sounds good. I remember asking (in another email) for it to be archived, similar to mozilla service week. But I thought that perhaps "retiring" it meant we're removing it completely. Thanks!
Thanks Tara. I took a quick stab at archiving this site and it was pretty seamless. I will archive it and we can revisit retiring the site in 2011. I will file an IT request to take down the existing site and redirect to the archived site. The final step will be to take care of the database, once we confirm with Jane what to do with the data.
Summary: Take down the forms on the 5 years of Firefox site → Archive the 5 years of Firefox site
No longer depends on: 607182
Tara, there is a difference between archiving and retiring and it's basically a judgement call about what to do with a given site. We have some guidelines that can be used to help make the decision. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Websites/Taskforce/Proposals/Abandoned_Sites#Guidelines As Ryan mentioned, we can revisit what to do with the site in 2011 and you're welcome to join us for that and help us decide what to do with this then.
The database associated with 5 Years of Firefox has been taken care of. Site archival complete.
