Umm....Seth says he'd file two bugs.  This one is for controlling the number of
sub-levels that aren't abbreviated.  Bug 61794 is for controlling whether or not
abbreviation is performed at all.  I'll leave it up to Seth whether he wants two
bugs or one to deal with this.

A comment for both bugs dealing with abbreviations of folder/newgroup names:

Please make the alphabetic sort order invariant with respect to the level of
abbreviation used. It is disconcerting to have groups change order based on
being abbreviated or not. For instance, on our news server we have groups like:

projects.infrastructure
projects.marketing
projects.sensitive
public.announce
public.FAQs
public.reports

that wind up as this abbreviated:

p.announce (public)
p.FAQs (public)
p.infrastructure (projects)
p.marketing (projects)
p.reports (public)
p.sensitive (projects)

and thus the hierachy of the groups is fouled up by abbreviation. I think
abbreviation should apply only to the display (to save screen space) not
effectively change the newsgroup name.

Re-tested on snapshot 0.9.7+ Gecko/20020109. While sorting seems to be ok now,
the first sub division of a newsgroup is still displayed with only ONE character
which is not enough. There should at least be two or three characters, better more.

Re-tested on build 20020328, same behaviour as in previous builds. Abbreviation
is a mozilla1.0 issue. At least there shoulkd be a correction of the "one
character display" in the second newsgroup level...
