gmail serves up an ancient static HTML interface to Fennec. Among other things, this interface doesn't really handle HTML mail at all, which makes it only somewhat usable. In contrast, to Webkit-based browsers, gmail offers a very slick, usable interface. Using the Phony add-on to nightly builds of Fennec to spoof the Android user-agent causes GMail to try and serve up the better version, but that version completely fails. Presumably the first step here wants to be an evangelism piece, where we find someone from Google who can tell us what they believe needs to happen in order to serve up a version of gmail that plays well with Fennec.
They just started sniffing for Fennec and showing the mobile pages. The next step is to get to their iPhone friendly pages.
