If you answeer a mail on a IMAP server mozilla first appends the mail to the "send" folder and then sets the Answered flags. Since the append command can take some time, it could be nice it the flags setting was performed before the append command.

Actually the set flags command is sent before the append command. Couldn't we just update the "Status" column right after the set flags command. The append command could take very long time to succed. How is the Status column updated?

How is the Status column updated?
Yes, he's right the \answered flag is set on the replied-to message before the sent message is appended to Sent mailbox. But I'm not sure what the actual bug is here. Maybe he is saying that the replied-to "back-arrow" icon is not visible on the original message until the message is sent and appended to Sent folder which might take a while on a slow network? I'm not aware of complaints about this or similar bugs being reported.

Yes. In which case it doesn't seem this would be an imap bug.
