We are in the early stages of formulating a plan to reorganise the content on www.mozilla.org. This may well involve setting up a second "machine" with the reorganised site on it, for testing purposes (we are going to spank it very hard.) This is a request to Server Operations to create wwwtest.mozilla.org. It could be an alias for a directory on the current machine, or a new machine. Whatever's easiest. There just needs to be something which _appears_ to be a machine running a webserver and an FTP server (_not_ a CVS server) for uploads. The load on it is not expected to be very high. We are hoping to do this over the weekend of the 16/17th December. If this deadline cannot be met, please let us know as soon as possible :-) Gerv
CCing some of what might be the right people (at a guess.) There isn't an "urgency" field, but consider it set to "fairly high" :-) Gerv
Gerv, can't we just use any webhost provider? If someone (mozilla.org?) donates 10$/month, we can set it up at a normal provider. Should be more cost effective. Would be fast, too.
We could do; the two things I am concerned about are: a) We need somewhere which isn't a subdirectory, i.e. relative links of the form A HREF="/index.html"> must still work. b) Bandwidth - we want decent bandwidth, with no-one paying per megabyte. Given that this request _should_ be a couple of lines of change in a config file and a run of the "mkdir" command, I don't see why it can't be done before the weekend. Gerv
> a) We need somewhere which isn't a subdirectory, i.e. relative links of the form > A HREF="/index.html"> must still work. > b) Bandwidth - we want decent bandwidth, with no-one paying per megabyte. he.net: all the badnwidth you need, virtual host, 10$/month for 500MB, 25$ for 10GB. The latter should really be enough in any case.
Another advantage to having mozilla.org set it up is the config can/will be identical (with the exception of CVS [for now, at least]). This is very useful in making sure that idosyncrosies don't creep in and then kill you when the design goes live.
I want to link this to bug 13866. I can set up the server to tegu, we can have CNAME wwwtest (or whatever) pointing to it. Then when everything is ready we just move CNAME www to point to it. There's related bug about moving lists under mailman (lists.mozilla.org) & new newsgroup architecture. I don't like ideas of outsourcing www.mozilla.org. You've forgot that most of the ISPs offering web sites also have traffic limitations which they can't handle with these cheap rates.

Depends on: 13866
Risto - I don't want to sound doubtful, but bug 13866 has been open for a year and two months. Are you sure that we'll get this by the weekend? :-) It really shouldn't be all that big a deal, either in the set-up or the resources consumed - not many people will be using it. Gerv
Completion of bug 13866 doesn't happen to have before you are ready to swing www.mozilla.org to new site.
We want wwwtest.mozilla.org to hack around new site ideas on. We plan to do said hacking this coming weekend. So, we really need wwwtest set up (on whatever box) by this weekend. :-) Is this going to be possible? Gerv
I don't know if I understand completely what you want. Correct me if I am wrong.. this is what I could easily have done by weekend: a) have apache server doc root on tegu.mozilla.org where I check out automatically docs from cvs from certain branch b) have wwwtest.mozilla.org pointing to that server We could do this very easily with virtual web server on gila, too (where current www runs) but I'd rather move it to new server so that when you're done, all we need to do is to switch DNS, and shut down old server. What else you mean by "hacking"?
Has a place for this been found yet? I might be able to host this on yoda, but I really don't like to run ftp since passwords are sent in the clear. Yoda is the bot box where oopsbot and techbot run and several people (Hixie, timeless, rufus, and others) already have accounts there. How much disk space is needed?
Gerv: If you need something to hack on I can set up www.mozilla.damowmow.com with SCP access for free; just drop me a line on sunday morning and I should have it set up within a few minutes. I refuse to use cleartext passwords and FTP, though, it would have to be SSH/SCP. (I presume the new site is going to use SSIs and .htaccess files, which is no problem.) Or we could register www.mozilla-test.org for these purposes. ;-)
I don't want to be on the way here (I'm unclear of what you really want)... moving this to nobody and anyone can take it from there.

I think that the plans in n.p.m.documentation have got to the stage that we are going to be fixing every problem with the site, rather than my original "Apply a few Band-Aids" plan. So, this bug should probably go into hibernation until we actually work out what we are doing :-) Gerv
WONTFIX - we are using Digital Creations' Zope servers for testing :-) Gerv
